Studio Flamingo is a photography studio that continually – and with apparent ease – kicks arse producing the dreamiest, sunniest aspirational photos that are one of the hallmarks of Australian identity. The images simply ache summer, and you can tell just by looking at them that the models are having a genuinely good time. That’s not surprising, given the whirlwind personality behind the Gold Coast-based studio.
Carlene Raschke, owner and operator of Studio Flamingo, happens to be the exact kind of woman you want to go out and grab a drink (or ten) with. Describing herself as “a passionate photographer, avid laugher and wannabe skater”, the secret to Carlene’s success may just be her innate professional ability to put all those around her at ease. Carlene loves taking photographs of women, as well listening to Blues music while drinking beer – or, alternatively, Cuban music alongside the taste of chilled margaritas.
R&T chatted with her recently about everything from the advice she’d give to beginners in her field right through to her twerking skills, with the talented creative admitting that, amongst other things, she’s partial to the occasional dancefloor battle.
“Recently, while dancefloor battling up in the cluurrb,” she said, (as you do), “I was floor-twerking, and as I tried to get up, my 6-inch platform heels gave way and I fell over. The room full of people all went, ‘oooohhhh’!’

Last one: what would you say to beginners in your field?
If you want it, work for it. The creative industry is extremely competitive, so make sure you are working harder than everyone else. take your time developing your style and stick to your aesthetic. Always remain calm and professional and always take the higher road, even when you on the inside your inner child is throwing a tantrum.
